Semaglutide

Description

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist consisting of a 31-amino-acid peptide chain with a lipophilic side chain attached, which promotes albumin binding and slows renal clearance. The resulting half-life of about 7 days supports once-weekly dosing.

Mechanism of Action

Semaglutide binds the GLP-1 receptor and stimulates glucose-dependent insulin release while suppressing glucagon secretion. It also slows gastric emptying and acts on hypothalamic appetite centres, reducing energy intake and body weight.
